David Canter is executive vice president and head of the RIA and family office Segments at Fidelity Institutional (FI), the Fidelity Investments business that offers financial professionals and institutions access to the investment, technology, and platform solutions they need to service their clients and grow their businesses. Fidelity Investments is a leading provider of investment management, retirement planning, portfolio guidance, brokerage, benefits outsourcing, and other financial products and services to institutions, financial intermediaries, and individuals.
In this role, Mr. Canter oversees a team that provides a comprehensive custody platform, brokerage services, trading capabilities, and practice management and consulting services to registered investment advisors, (including strategic acquirers and multi-family offices), single family offices, and wealthy families.
Prior to assuming his current role, Mr. Canter served as executive vice president of Practice Management and Consulting for Fidelity Clearing & Custody Solutions. In this capacity, he was responsible for leading the development of a comprehensive Practice Management program structured around helping advisors accelerate growth, streamline their operations, and manage risk. Prior to that, Mr. Canter served as executive vice president and chief operating officer for Fidelity Institutional Wealth Services (IWS), where he was responsible for the oversight, efficiency, and effectiveness of client-related operational processes. He was also the business lead, coordinating legal, risk, and compliance activities.
Prior to joining Fidelity in 2009, Mr. Canter managed certain operational functions and vendor relationships and served as chief legal and compliance officer for Post Advisory Group, an institutional investment advisor in the high- yield realm. Mr. Canter also held various management positions at Charles Schwab & Co., within the firm’s RIA business, including a corporate counsel role; vice president, Schwab Institutional Trading & Operations (SITO); and head counsel to the Schwab Institutional business. Previously, he held positions with the QuellosGroup, an investment adviser focused on the fund-of-funds business, and the New York Stock Exchange Division of Enforcement.
Mr. Canter received his bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin and his juris doctorate from the University of Baltimore School of Law. Michael has spent most of his life in the public sector working for the United States Treasury culminating with his position as America’s first and most senior Treasury diplomat to Qatar and Kuwait. In this role, he acted as principal liaison to each nation’s banking sectors while serving in two presidential administrations and for three Treasury secretaries. He held counterterrorism and intelligence roles, traveling to over 20 countries, and was on the Treasury team that crafted sanctions against Russia, ISIS, and Al-Qaeda.
After departing Treasury, he used experiences overseas and knowledge of international and monetary policy to help lead the domestic and international growth of a global multi-family office called Tiedemann Advisors. Michael helped oversee the firm’s growth from $12 billion in assets to over $30 billion. With his experience dealing with digital assets while at Treasury, he was also Director for Digital Asset Education at Tiedemann, providing education to families and strategy to the firm on issues related to blockchain technology. Michael recently started working directly in the technology sector and currently serves as an Executive at Amazon Web Services.
Michael is a speaker, author, and commentator on the global economy, digital assets, and contemporary art market. He is Deputy Director at the Trilateral Commission and member of the Bretton Woods Committee. He is also a fellow at the Atlantic Council and the Center for a New American Security. He has published over 50 articles, including the report, The Future of the US Dollar: Weaponizing the US Financial System. Michael has been featured in Barron’s, Financial Times, Associated Press, CNBC, and lectured at Harvard, Yale, Stanford, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
His philanthropic work has included chairing the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s Next Generation Board and serving as the Vice Chairman of the board of the Promise Fund of Florida, which focuses on providing breast and cervical cancer screenings for underprivileged women. He holds a Juris Doctor from Boston University, a Master’s from Boston University’s Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from George Washington University.
