Crypto Week in Washington: What It Means for You

It’s official: this is Crypto Week – the first time Congress has made such a declaration. The House of Representatives is devoting the entire week to advancing legislation to finally bring clarity to digital assets.

Lawmakers are considering three major bills, each of which would affect both the crypto market and your work as a financial professional.

The first is the GENIUS Act. It would set national rules for stablecoins, requiring issuers to hold 1:1 reserves in high-quality, liquid assets such as U.S. Treasury bills, submit to audits, and meet transparency standards. These reserves must match the value of stablecoins in circulation and be available for redemption at any time. The bill also allows federal and state regulators to supervise the market. The importance of this legislation cannot be overstated, as stablecoins already hold more than $200 billion (representing 10% of all the U.S. currency in circulation) and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has projected that stablecoins will hold $8 trillion within two years. Already, Amazon, Walmart, Meta, and others have announced plans to launch their own stablecoins.

Next is the Clarity Act. This bill resolves one of the biggest issues in crypto: who regulates it. The Clarity Act place most decentralized tokens under the jurisdiction of the CFTC, giving the industry much-needed space to grow while still protecting investors.

Finally, there’s the Anti-CBDC Act, which would prevent the Federal Reserve from launching a central bank digital currency. The bill’s backers say a Fed-issued stablecoin would weaken privacy, lead to government overreach, and unfairly compete with private-sector stablecoins, while others argue that the absence of a U.S.-based CDBC would hurt our competitiveness as other countries launch their own versions.

These votes come at a time of strong market momentum. Bitcoin reached $123,000, and Ethereum, Solana, and other digital assets are also rallying, as are crypto-related stocks and ETFs. Clearly, the investment community is expecting Congress to quickly pass all three bills.

If you’ve earned your CBDA designation, you already know that the crypto community has waited a decade for this progress. That wait might soon be over. And even if not, Crypto Week proves that this new asset class has gone mainstream, and that means you need to be ready tell your clients what these developments mean for their portfolios.

Crypto Week is more than a headline. It’s a turning point.
